Michael Polk on Why Private Companies Move Differently

Not every retired chief executive comes back to run a smaller company. Michael Polk Newell Brands did, and his account of the switch offers a window into what changes when a leader moves from a public giant to a privately held business. Polk spent years at Kraft Foods and Unilever before running Newell Brands, and by the time he stepped away from Newell in 2019, he had overseen one of the more visible turnarounds in consumer goods.

Rather than staying retired, Polk took the chief executive role at Implus LLC in 2020, a fitness and active lifestyle company backed by Berkshire Partners. The pandemic arrived almost immediately after he did, forcing him to rebuild parts of the company’s operating model while keeping financial performance on track during a period of widespread disruption across the industry.

A Flatter Structure, A Closer View

Michael Polk points to the flatter management structure at Implus as the biggest departure from his prior roles. Without the layers common at a large public company, decisions move faster and touch more people directly. He has said this setup exposes leaders and employees to a wider range of business functions, from sourcing and manufacturing to the retailer partnerships that keep products on shelves.

That exposure, in Polk’s telling, comes with tradeoffs. Smaller companies have fewer resources to fall back on, which means employees often take on responsibility well before they might at a larger firm. Polk frames this as an advantage rather than a burden, arguing that people learn fastest when decisions land directly on their desks.

Having grown Newell Brands‘ enterprise value from around five billion dollars to more than fifteen billion during his tenure, Polk brings a track record built at scale to a company built for closeness. He now describes his work at Implus as a chance to blend the high-level instincts of a public company chief executive with the hands-on marketing and sales work that first drew him into the industry decades ago.
