Joe Arpaio Made Things Difficult in Arizona
Joe Arpaio was the sheriff of Phoenix, Arizona. He was a corrupt sheriff and he tried to make people do things he wanted by throwing his power around. He was doing things that were completely illegal, but he didn’t care. He just wanted to get his way and would do anything he could to ensure he was making things hard on people. He was especially cruel to people who were trying to come to Arizona. He knew things would be hard for them, but he tried his best to make everything even harder when he was working on different things.
Larkin and Lacey saw everything Joe Arpaio was doing. They wanted to put a stop to it, but they knew they would need to call him out on the things he was doing if they were going to do that. They spent months gathering information and putting a story together. Then, the published it. They had a successful Internet publication they used to publish the story on so they were confident many people would see it. When they made the choice to publish the story about Joe Arpaio, they had no idea it would blow up in the way it did after they had started the publication.
The men published the story, and Joe Arpaio was not happy. In fact, they had done something bad enough he tried to arrest them and charge them with a false crime. This, of course, was illegal, but it was something Joe Arpaio was used to doing so he did it without any type of idea as to what the consequences would be. The arrest was the first part of his downfall. It would eventually lead to him getting in trouble and the men getting a huge settlement from him.
Once they fought the charges he was trying to stick on them, they realized they were going to win. They accepted his offer to settle out of court for three million dollars. They used the money they won and put it back into the cause they were supportive of. Since they were activists, they wanted to use the money to start their own organization. They are now running the Frontera Fund and helping other people who have been charged with crimes they simply didn’t commit. It is what they wanted to do for a long time, and the arrest gave them a chance to actually do it.
Lacey and Larkin Provide Assistance to Victims of Joe Arpaio
In 2007, Joe Arpaio ordered his deputies to act out the illegal arrest of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, the co-owners of The Phoenix New Times. Arpaio violated their first amendment rights when he ordered his men to arrest the two for material they published in their paper.
In 2013, Lacey and Larkin finally put their issues with Arpaio to rest by receiving a near 4 million dollar settlement, or so everyone thought.
Lacey and Larkin refuse to put Arpaio behind them, in fact they are working harder than ever to make sure that Arpaio is never able to violate another person’s constitutional rights again.
Instead of retiring and enjoying life, they have decided to create two new organizations to focus on revealing corrupt politicians for what they are.
Front Page Confidential, is the publication they created to replace Phoenix New Times, after they sold it. Their new paper puts all of their focus on combating corrupt politicians who aim to violate a person’s civil rights. Their intention is to prevent social injustices like those perpetrated by Arpaio from ever being committed to anyone else.
The other organization they have formed is called The Frontera Fund. Their new fundraiser works in collaboration with other charities to work towards providing greater quality of life to Hispanic residents and immigrants in Arizona State.
After seeing the pain that Arpaio has caused for the Hispanic community, Lacey and Larkin want to come up with a solution that corrects the wrongs Arpaio has committed.
